The moment Somila Tanti, 18, is renuited with her father Ramesh Tanti, who travelled to Delhi to try to rescue her three years after was trafficked from their home on the Nahorani tea estate, Sonitpur, Assam. She had been sold on b y an agent and was working as a domestic slave in Delhi.
Illegally low wages on Assam’s tea estates mean parents cannot afford to look after their children and their daughters are easy prey for traffickers who lure them to Delhi with promises of a new life, then sell them as domestic slaves.
Several girls are known to have been trafficked from the Nahorani tea plantation in Sonitpur, Assam. The estate is operated by Amalgamated Plantations, which is owned by a consortium led by Tata Tetley and including the World Bank’s investment arm.
